IMPORTANT:
If you are using the Internet Explorer, I recommend to turn off "show friendly http error messages" in your preferences

Otherwise, Microsofts own http error message will be shown if a 404 page is smaller than 512 bytes (0,5 KB).
If you plan to create your own 404 page and if you want to guarantee that really *all* people
can enjoy it, then create a 404 page bigger than 512 bytes.
